Have you kicked yourself in the past for not listening to your inner voice, your intuition? Intuition, that instinctual, gut feeling can often be confused with fear.
Most of us are familiar with fear, that loud voice inside of us that screams out every time we are about to step out of our comfort zone.
Sometimes, with our most important decisions, we confuse the voice of fear for the wisdom of intuition and don’t allow ourselves to follow our gut feeling, thus limiting ourselves and our potential.
Trust your intuition
This article on Happify Daily, helps us understand the difference between fear and intuition.
Build Body Awareness – Intuition can be easily ignored, and sometimes not even heard or recognized. Fear is a strong feeling of unease, your body’s way of telling you to stay safe.
Integration vs. Catastrophization – Intuition integrates the neural networks from different parts of the brain. Fear does none of that. It activates the amygdala as a neural shortcut that also leads to a racing heart and a catastrophizing mind.
They Emerge in Different Situations – Intuition emerges for the larger decisions of life, when reason does not seem to provide conclusive answers. But fear simply says “no” to all that may potentially harm us, however remote and far-fetched the possibility.
Feel Comfortable, Not Relieved – Intuition points us in a direction that makes us feel comfortable, even if not certain. Fear, on the contrary, dictates a decision that makes us feel relieved, as though we just survived a threat to our very existence.
Befriend Them Both – Intuition may simply be experience. None of that is possible if we shy away when faced with fear. Instead, we need to recognize the voice of fear, befriend it and allow it to trust the knowledge of experience, the voice of intuition. Over time, both learn to cohabitate in peaceful existence.
If you want to live a life true to yourself and your potential, it’s time to practice listening to your gut. Trust your inner voice, stop hiding behind fear, and start allowing your intuition to speak up.
